The self-publishing industry has converged on a set of documented BSR-to-sales reference points for the US book store — the chart Kindlepreneur and TCK Publishing publish, and the reference Publisher Rocket’s numbers are comparable to. This calculator interpolates between those anchors (log-log, because rank vs. sales follows a power law) and wraps the result in the uncertainty band the source charts themselves show. Below rank 200 the band widens further: that region is the sparsest part of the chart and single-title variance is highest. Past the last documented rank (500,000) the tool extrapolates and says so.
Inside KDPie the same chart is the baseline for Amazon.com only. For other marketplaces KDPie deliberately does not scale it — non-US estimates are grounded in each book’s own marketplace signals: its real rank history and Amazon’s reported monthly sales. That is what turns a chart guess into a grounded estimate.

What is the Amazon Best Sellers Rank (BSR)?
BSR is the sales rank Amazon recalculates for every product, roughly hourly, based on recent sales compared to other products in the same store. Lower is better: BSR 1 is the best-selling book on Amazon. It reflects recent sales velocity, not lifetime sales.
What is a good BSR for a book?
On Amazon.com, a BSR under 100,000 usually means a book sells around a copy a day or more. Under 10,000 is roughly 20+ copies a day, and under 1,000 is a strong seller at around 120+ copies a day. Treat these as wide estimates — actual sales at the same rank vary by day, season and category.
How accurate is a BSR to sales calculator?
It is a formula estimate, not a measurement. This calculator interpolates between the documented reference points the self-publishing industry has converged on, and shows a range instead of a single number because the same rank can mean quite different sales on different days. For decisions that cost money, ground the estimate in a book’s own sales history.
Why does it refuse to show numbers for Amazon.de or Amazon.co.uk?
Because the same rank means very different sales in different marketplaces, and no documented public curve exists for the non-US stores — so any calculator that shows you an Amazon.de or Amazon.co.uk number is rescaling the US chart, which produces invented numbers. KDPie estimates non-US sales from each book’s own marketplace data instead of scaling a US chart.
Do Kindle and paperback share one BSR?
No. The Kindle Store and the printed Books store keep separate rankings, so the same title usually has two different ranks. This calculator uses the industry reference chart for the Amazon.com Books store — Kindle-store ranks follow a broadly similar but not identical curve, so treat an estimate from a Kindle rank as rougher.
