The 70 % option requires a list price inside KDP’s band ($2.99–$12.99 on Amazon.com, £1.77–£12.99, €2.69–€12.99), so KDP would not accept this combination — switch to 35 % to see the royalty it actually offers, provided the price clears the 35 % minimum.
This price is outside KDP’s allowed range for the 35 % option (the minimum rises with file size; the maximum is $200 / £150 / €215) — KDP would not accept it.

FAQ
How does KDP calculate paperback royalties?
Royalty = (royalty rate × list price) − printing cost. Since June 2025 the rate is 60% when your list price is at or above the marketplace threshold ($9.99 on Amazon.com, £7.99 on Amazon.co.uk, €9.99 on the euro stores, CA$13.99 on Amazon.ca) and 50% below it. The list price in KDP always excludes tax — KDP applies the whole formula to the price you enter. (Expanded Distribution channels pay a flat 40% of the channel list price minus printing instead.)
What does it cost to print a book with KDP?
For black ink, a paperback of 24–110 pages costs a flat fee ($2.30 on Amazon.com, €2.05 on the euro stores). From 111 pages the cost is a fixed part plus a per-page part — for example $1.00 + $0.012 per page on Amazon.com, or €0.75 + €0.012 per page on Amazon.de. Large trim sizes (wider than 6.12 in / 155.5 mm or taller than 9 in / 228.6 mm) cost more.
What is the minimum list price on KDP?
The lowest price at which your royalty is not negative. Below the 60% threshold the rate is 50%, so the minimum is twice the printing cost. Once that would reach the threshold, the minimum sits at the threshold itself or at the printing cost divided by 0.6 — whichever is higher. This calculator shows the minimum for your exact page count and marketplace.
Does VAT reduce my paperback royalty?
No. For print books, KDP’s rule is that "VAT … should not be included in your list price" — you enter a VAT-exclusive price and Amazon adds local VAT on top for customers, so your royalty is computed exactly on the price you set. Note the customer-facing price on Amazon.de is therefore higher than your list price: +7% for books, +19% for products Germany taxes at the standard rate (e.g. notebooks and planners). eBooks work differently — there the price you enter includes VAT, and the royalty is computed on the price net of VAT (7% in Germany, 5.5% in France, 0% in the UK, 4% in Italy and Spain).
What is the eBook delivery fee?
Under the 70% royalty option Amazon deducts a delivery fee based on your file size: $0.15 per MB on Amazon.com, £0.10 on Amazon.co.uk, €0.12 on Amazon.de, Amazon.fr, Amazon.it and Amazon.es. The 35% option has no delivery fee.
Is the 70% eBook option always better than 35%?
Usually, but not always. The 70% option requires a list price inside KDP’s band — $2.99–$12.99 on Amazon.com since July 2026 (KDP expanded it from $9.99), £1.77–£12.99 on Amazon.co.uk, €2.69–€12.99 on the euro stores (.de, .fr, .it, .es) — and it deducts the delivery fee. For a large file at a low price, 35% can occasionally pay more. Enter your numbers in both modes and compare.
